Scientist of Ural State Medical University is developing a new method of glioblastoma (brain tumor) treatment, based on genetic engineering approach. Vsevolod Melekhin, lecturer at the USMU department of medical biology and genetics, had offered an all-new approach to the therapy of cancerous diseases. Biotechnologies, pinpointing the pathology, are the key element of his research. The case is of delivering the Klotho gene, responsible for longevity and cancer resistance, directly to tumor cells. Subjected to its influence, glioblastoma stops synthesising new cells and the old ones start dying. Non-clinical data confirms the growth reduction of tumor cells by 20%, their resilience – by 80%.

It is still a long way to development of the most agressive type of brain cancer (glioblastoma). However, the research of Ural scientists had allowed for a breakthrough in medicine – discovery of malignant growth arrest method by introduction of Klotho gene to cancerous tissues.
