Sixth-year students of the pediatric faculty of the Ural State Medical University (USMU) Maria Mkhitaryan, Tatiana Tarasova, Alexandra Gubina, Tatiana Chicheva, Anna Remizova and Olga Tokareva received letters of thanks from the chief physician of Children’s City Hospital No. 8 – for their contribution to the work of the polyclinic during the anti-epidemic measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. Students underwent practical training at the outpatient service of the Children’s City Hospital in November-December 2020.

What the practice of future pediatricians consisted of, said Maria Mkhitaryan:

“I underwent practical training on the basis of the Children’s City Clinical Hospital No. 8 in Polyclinic No. 3 as an assistant to the doctor of the children’s polyclinic. On the first working day, I was attached to the doctor and worked in accordance with his schedule. I participated in the reception of patients, together with the doctor collected anamnesis, complaints, assessed the clinical condition using various methods of examining organs and systems (percussion, palpation, auscultation, measuring blood pressure and counting the pulse), prescribed symptomatic treatment, participated in the preparation of documentation ( outpatient card, dispensary observation card, filling out coupons, certificates of incapacity for work), wrote out certificates to kindergarten and school, referrals for consultation to specialists, for analyzes, for instrumental studies.

I also independently conducted preventive examinations of children with an assessment of physical development, made plans for dispensary observation of patients with various nosologies, and also worked with automated information system “MIR”.

I would like to express my gratitude to the management of practical training, in particular Chelpanova Maria Alexandrovna, who listened to each student when she was assigned to polyclinics, was attentive and did everything to make the practical training as efficient and comfortable as possible. I also want to thank the management of Polyclinic No. 3 and the doctor, Serditova Lyudmila Aleksandrovna, for the warm welcome, help, knowledge and experience.

I’m sure six weeks of practical training is an invaluable experience for every student. During this period, we used the knowledge of such disciplines as anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, infectious diseases, dermatovenerology, neurology, surgery, pediatrics, and also improved communication skills when communicating with patients and their parents, learned how to establish contact with them, conduct a confidential dialogue, correctly raise questions and convince of the need for prevention and therapy.

We felt like a part of a team, learned to work in a team and build constructive business communication with colleagues. Practical training has helped to improve basic scientific knowledge, practical skills, and to shape clinical thinking, which is the main aspect of medical practice. “
