From January 1 2023, amendments to the Federal Law “On the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens in the Russian Federation” Entered into Force, namely, there is an additional article “6.2. Temporary residence permits for the purpose of obtaining education.

Foreign citizens who are studying full-time in state educational and scientific organizations under the bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s, traineeship’s, probation assistantship’s, postgraduate study’s programs will be able to obtain a temporary residence permit for the purpose of obtaining education.

What does temporary residence permit for the purpose of obtaining education give to a student:

1. Temporary residence permits for the purpose of obtaining education is valid for the entire duration of study;
2. Foreign students who draw up the temporary residence permits for the purpose of obtaining education are exempt from the annual obligation to provide a residence certificate;
3. Temporary residence permits for the purpose of obtaining education will be valid for another 180 days after the end of the study period;
4. Foreign students receive the right within 3 years after graduation in a simplified manner to obtain a residence permit in the Russian Federation.

What a foreign student needs to do in order to obtain the temporary residence permits for the purpose of obtaining education:

1. Contact the territorial body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia;
2. Submit an application for the temporary residence permits for the purpose of obtaining education;
3. Attach to it a document confirming enrollment for full-time study at an educational institution.
