Ella Novoselova and Tatyana Skutina, 6th year students of the Ural State Medical University (USMU), Pediatric Faculty, conducted a study on the connection between the new coronavirus infection and Kawasaki syndrome in children under the guidance of Rima Ushakova, Associate Professor of the Department of Polyclinical Pediatrics. Scientific work was recognized as one of the best at three International Scientific and Practical Conferences.

“The study began during the summer clinical practice. At one of the clinical appointments, we diagnosed and treated a patient with idiopathic Kawasaki syndrome with a positive PCR test for coronavirus,” said Tatyana Skutina.

After a thorough analysis of the anamnesis, pathogenesis, clinical course of the syndrome and differential diagnosis of Kawasaki syndrome with Kawasaki-like syndrome, the students came to an interesting conclusion.

“Now we can assume that coronavirus is a possible etiological factor of Kawasaki disease in children. Thanks to our knowledge of English, we have analyzed all the currently available articles by foreign authors from PubMed and UpToDate about identical cases, because the number of cases with Kawasaki syndrome has increased 30 times,” Ella Novoselova shared.

It was very exciting to be engaged in such a topical research, the students of USMU note. Now future pediatricians are preparing an article based on its results for publication in the VAK journal.
