The Head of the Department is Stolin Alexey Vladimirovich, candidate of medical sciences, associate professor, surgeon of the highest qualification category, chief surgeon of the Directorate of health of the city of Yekaterinburg, a member of the Russian society of surgeons and Russian society of endoscopic surgeons.

The Department was established in 1979, the first head of the Department was Lisienko Valentina Mikhailovna, doctor of medical sciences, Professor, academician of AES named after A. M. Prokhorov, honored health care professional. In 2008 A.V. Stolin was elected the head of the department. Teaching staff of the Department are actively engaged in academic, educational, scientific, vocational, organizational, methodological activities.
