Methodological school of USMU is a historically established system of traditions, conceptual foundations of organization, management, maintenance of educational process of information and methodological, material and technical support that is maintained, transmitted and developed by generations of teachers of the University.
Methodological school brings together teaching staff of USMU in a team, reaching goals and solving problems in the field of educational activities of the University: the creation of conditions of training the graduates shaping the moral, cultural and scientific potential in the health sector of the Ural region in the conditions of innovative development of Russia.
The Foundation of the methodological school of the University was established in early thirties of the last century. During the establishment of the University and its first graduates (from 1931 to 1935) the training of doctors was headed by famous scientists, Professors A. T. Lidsky, V. O., Kler, K. P. Yagodin, C,D,Chaklin, S.Y. Golosovker E. S. Krol –Klivanskaya and many others. Outstanding clinicians became teachers, passing the first medical students the standards of ethical communication with patients, forming the skills that they had mastered. The most important methodological principle laid down in those years and continuing in USMU to this day is the priority of practical training, training of future doctors directly at the bedside or in outpatient practice. The heads of the first Department of clinical subjects were doctors of sciences, Professors A. Yu, L. M., Ratner, B. P. Kushelevskiy, associate professors A. P. Lavrentyev, S. A. Brailovsky, from the beginning they organized educational process directly in the best hospitals, medical institutions of that time: city clinical hospital № 3, eye hospital named after A.A. Mstislavsky, research Institute of maternity and infancy, traumatology and orthopedics, tuberculosis.
The late 30s – the early 40s, despite the hardships of the war period, are characterized by the introduction of the methods of classes in the natural sciences using teaching, laboratory equipment, where practical skills were developed. Practical orientation of educational programs is clearly seen in all periods of the educational activities of USMU. Attracting students to scientific research conducted by scientists of the University on military medical topics, the problems of epidemiology and occupational hygiene in the defense plants was the direct continuation of the learning process and at the same time the education of the teaching staff for medical university. In the same period postgraduate training of medical doctors was justified and implemented at the university.
In the postwar years methodological schools developed and strengthened on the basic directions of training of specialists for health care. The development of the methodical school of hygienists and epidemiologists is associated with the name of Professor S. V. Miller. On his example Professors A. V. Gavrilova (occupational hygiene), I. P. Sakulin (epidemiology), V. A. Litkens, A. P. Boyarsky (Public health), E. V. Gottlieb (Communal hygiene), associate Professor N. V. Ryabova (hygiene of children and adolescents) assisted each young teacher, often coming straight from university. Open classes, mandatory attendance at lectures of all teachers of the Department, a detailed analysis of the methodology of lectures, workshops are the main methods of training of a new generation of teachers.
In educational work in the direction of internal diseases the most noticeable mark was made by I. V. Shaklein (Phthisiology), Heinonen I. M. (cardiology), A. I. Kurtev (infectious diseases); in surgery, obstetrics, gynecology these are professors V. D. Chaklin (traumatology, military surgery) N.P.Makarova, V. M. Lisienko, V. A. Kozlov (surgical diseases), I. I. Benediktov (obstetrics, gynecology). The common goals, objectives and principles of methodological support of training of doctors distinguishes methodological school of pediatricians, the most prominent representatives of which were and are induced professors E. D. Vogulkina, Honored worker of science O. A. Sinyavskaya, A. M. Cherednichenko, N.A. Kharitonova, N. E.Sannikova. Doctor of Sciences, Professors L. P. Malchikova, B. Y. Bulatovskaya, V. S. Pogodin are the founders of the methodical schools for training dentists. The names of professors A. M. Genkin, M. G. Bystritskaya, N.A.Glotova, associate professors K. S. Zhdanova, L. A. Kaminskaya are associated with the formation and development of methodical directions of the school in the natural science subjects: development of educational and information support of the laboratory work, the implementation of tests as assessment materials, training and research work of students is not a complete list of innovations introduced in the educational process.
Particular system of methodological support was developed in the study of humanitarian, socio-economic subjects. The system was characterized by the development of materials, creation of methodical offices, organizing and directing the work for the Communist education of students and staff. In turn, the teachers who guided the ideology of the Communist party were all tightly controlled by the district committees, city committees of CPSU. However, in those years, first a coherent system of methodological support was formed, and secondly, and to date, teaching staff of the departments of philosophy, history, law, etc. preserve the best traditions of those years and do not disavow responsibility for the education of high moral qualities of the graduates, the responsibility for the formation of their cultural competences.
A strong leader of the methodic school of USMU which left a noticeable trace in the current educational system of the University that defined the ideology of the scientifi and methodical work was vice-rector for educational affairs of USMU in the last quarter of the 20th century – Professor V. S. Polkanov. Having the degree of candidate of sciences, for scientific and reasonable productive system, education in the process of methodical work of a generation of new, enthusiastic teachers Vitaly Stepanovich was awarded the title of Professor. Since that period the presence of work programs for 100% of the subjects of the curriculum in the departments, and the methodological support of practical training is the standard at the University. This work was directed and controlled by the methodological office created in the 80s, which was led by the advanced methodologists, associate professors A. A. Maratkanova, Z. M. Melnikova. In high school, along with the methodological work, the scientific and methodological direction was developed. The University conducted scientific and methodical conferences, developed the basis of the methods of business games, development of interdepartmental programs (prototype of interdisciplinary modules for the formation of competencies) introduced the presentation of educational information in the form of logical graph structures, established methodological approaches to standardised forms of knowledge control. Conference proceedings were published. Until that time the publications on the assessment of effectiveness of using case study in the learning process, the use of control, initial and final testing, conducting classes in the form of role-playing games, etc are of particular interest.
In 1978 the Central methodical Council was created as the body that organizes and guides the methodological activity of the University, then (subject committees).
In 2010, with the transition to FGOS VPO in higher education methodical commission of specialty (MKS) was established for each basic educational program of higher professional education. The main tasks of MKS is the development of the Mission, goals and objectives of OOP VPO, scope definition, objects, types and tasks of professional activity of graduates based on the requirements of FGOS/GOS VPO in accordance with the traditions of pedagogical schools of USMU and the needs of stakeholders.
